1.1.2Forms
| nom./acc. sg. | linẽd | LW 12.10 (Sardis) |
Contra Gusmani 1964a:161, linẽd cannot be a verbal form, but should be a noun in -ẽ-; cf. also fatinẽd. It is thus the subject or direct object of the more likely predicate of the sentence lafod ‘?’. Melchert 2004b:146 n. 11 posits tentatively that the common gender stems in -ẽd- (as in the likely personal name patnẽdš) are to be equated with the Lycian ones in -ẽ(i)- (e.g. Xerẽ(i)- (PN), Pigrẽ(i)- (PN)). However, the neuter nouns like linẽd and fatinẽd cannot belong here, since there are not expected to have undergone i-mutation. Therefore, it is more likely that -ẽ- represent an original neuter n-stem and that -d is simply the nom./acc. sg. n. ending (generalized from the pronominal to the nominal stems in Lydian). See also Lyd. amẽd and Lyd. kẽmẽd.
