1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation
The phonological interpretation of this word is provisional, since it hinges entirely on whether or not the word should be assigned to the family around /taw(i)-/ ‘eye’, as suggested by Yakubovich (pers. comm.). The sign *375 appears only a handful of times in the HLuw. corpus and has not yet been fixed with either a logographic or syllabic interpretation, cf. the remarks by Hawkins 2000a:471.

1.1.4Meaning
The word is attested once in the protasis of a curse formula, clearly denoting something negative. Moreover, if the word should indeed belong to the family around /taw(i)-/ ‘eye’, its meaning can be regarded as reasonably certain because of the close cognate CLuw. tawalli-(ti) ‘to glare, cast the evil eye upon’ (see CLL:225, Sasseville 2021a:140 n. 17). SULTANHAN, §47 reads: ni-pa-wa/i-ta-a “FEMINA”-na-ti-i-sa ta-*375-li-i-sa pa+ra/i-sa5+ra/i u-pa-i, approx. /niba=wa=an=tta wanattis tawallis parsari ubai/, ‘(He who desires this name), or the female evil eye (?) brings him away (i.e. leads him astray?)’ (cf. Hawkins 2000a:467).

1.1.5Stem
Provided the interpretation of the attested form as /tawall(i)-/ is correct, the word represents originally an adjective in /-alla/i-/, later substantivised as a common gender. The derivational basis is the likewise attested /taw(i)-/ ‘eye’.
