1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

Based on parallel contexts, Otten 1953a:104 recognized that ērḫuwalli(ya)- and ērwalli(ya)- are variants of the same word and already explained the difference with -ḫ(u)- as a “schwach artikulierten Laut”; for the phenomenon, cf. also Melchert 1994a:258.

1.1.4Meaning

Together with parittarwalli(ya)-, CLuw. ir(ḫu)walli(ya)- forms a merism, which is part of list of merisms that aims to denote or describe the entirety of cases of tapāru, curse and perjury. The semantic interpretation of ēr(ḫu)wa- and its derivatives by Meriggi 1962c:259 (and Meriggi 1980a:283) and Carruba 1982a:45 (and Carruba 1982b:3) was based on etymological considerations, viz. on the identity of the first two sounds ēr-/ir- shared with Hitt. ērman- ‘illness’ (adopted in HHw:32, Hutter 2003a:262, but not in HEG A-K:369f., Starke 1990a:200, CLL:92; cf. also DLL:36f.: ‘sens inconnu’). Most recently, Mouton & Yakubovich 2019a:214-220 and 224-229 argued persuasively that the base of ēr(ḫū)walli(ya)-, viz. ēr(ḫu)wa- c., means ‘(the) interior’. Taking into account the subsequent adjectival derivatives and their substantivizations (see under Stem), they arrived at ‘internal’ as the plausible translation of ēr(ḫē)walli(ya)-. This is more than compatible with the derivational scenario drawn for its antonym parittarwalli(ya)- ‘external’ (see under Lemma) and therefore accepted here.Outdated Shevoroshkin 1964a:24 and Shevoroshkin 1964c:77.

1.1.5Stem

The following chain of derivational processes can be assumed (following Melchert 1992b: 44 n. 7, CLL:92, and Mouton & Yakubovich 2019a:218): base *irḫ(i)- ‘border’ → *ir(ḫu)wa(/i)- ‘belonging to (the inside of the) border’ (polar -wa(/i)- suffix) → ēr(ḫu)wa- c. ‘(the) interior’ (non-mutating -a- suffix) → *ir(ḫu)walla/i- ‘related to the interior, internal’ (adjectival suffix -alla/i-) → *ir(ḫu)wall(i)- ‘(the) interior’ (substantivization) → ēr(ḫu)walli(ya)- ‘internal’ (adjectival suffix -i(ya)-).
