1.1.1Transmission

This lexeme is attested in the inscription of the inscribed pillar of Xanthos, dated contextually to shortly after the ascension of Artaxerxes II in 405-404 BCE and stylistically to around 400 BCE (Borchhardt & Eichner 1997-1999a:19f.).

1.1.2Forms

3sg. pres. ind. act. sukredi TL 44d.50 (Xanthos)

Schürr 2018b:80 and Shevoroshkin 2014a:253 regard the form as an abl./instr. instead, which would be formally possible, except that the word is the only candidate for a predicate in the transitive sentence, strongly suggesting a verbal form instead. The verbal form is also preferred by Eichner 1993a:150 n. 139 and Melchert (DLL:129) and also Shevoroshkin 1971a:209.

1.1.3Meaning

The verbal sukre- denotes an action performed on a sacrificial animal (Sasseville 2014-2015a:115). Shevoroshkin 1971a:209 suggests the meaning ‘to honor’, which is untenable. No meaning is offered by Melchert (DLL:129) or Neumann 2007a:334. Pending a solid etymological approach for the derivational base, no semantic interpretation will be attempted for the denominative verb either.

1.1.4Stem

The word sukredi is best interpreted as a denominative verb derived from the noun sukre- (Eichner 1993a:150 n. 139, Sasseville 2021a:207-210).

For the derivational base, see Lyc. B sukre-.
