DLL:32 adduces also ar-pu-wa-an-ni-ia at KUB 20.52 iv 5 (Hittite transmission), but as noted in CLL:30, the form and meaning do not permit a provisional analysis or assignment to a language (cf. also HW:423, HW 2nd ed. A:341, HED A, E, I:168f., Starke 1990a:62, HHw:23 with speculative or incoherent attempts).

1.1.4Meaning

The CLuw. abl./instr. arpuwanāti is part of list of body parts of a ram that is deployed to remove evil: (12)[la-la-i-d]u-ut-ta pa-ap-ra-ad-du-ut-ta 4-ti pa-a-ar-ta-a-ti (13)[             ]x-ti za-ar-wa-ni-ia-ti ar-pu-wa-na-a-ti (14)[ma-an-na-ḫu-un-na-t]i da-a-u-wa-aš-⸢ša-an⸣-za-ti ti-ti-ta-a-ti (15)[UZUš]à -⸢ti⸣ UZUníg.gig-ti 12⸣-ta-a-ti UZUḫa!-ap-pí-ša-a-ti “He shall [take] (it) from [hi]m. He shall carry (it) away with the four legs, with [             ], with the horny crooks, wi[th the [nose], the pupils of the eyes, the [hea]rt (and) liver, with the twelve body parts!” (KUB 35.43 II 10-15, transliteration after Starke 1985b:144, translation following Oettinger 2019a:463). The “horny crooks” designate the crooked, bent horns of the ram. While already Otten 1953a:27, 99 (followed in HW 2nd ed. A:341) stated that arpuwanāti denotes a body part, the recognition of the precise meaning and stem was delayed by the erroneous linking of the word to the word family around (Glossenkeil)Glossenkeilarpa- ‘tumult, strife’ and alleged †arpuwann(i)- ‘malheureux’ (DLL:32:, followed in HW:384 positing arpuwana-, HW:423, in HED A, E, I:168f. and Starke 1990a:62, but not in Meriggi 1957a:216 and HW 2nd ed. A:341) or †arpuwatar (HEG A-K:65f., HHw:23). Only in 1990 did Melchert (in CLL:30) suggest that the word is the ablative of a -war/-wan- stem cognate with Hitt. arpuwant- ‘slanting, steep, awry’. This formal and semantic interpretation is accepted by Oettinger 2019a:462f. as well as here.

1.1.5Stem

As mentioned under Meaning, Melchert (in CLL:30) also elucidated the stem formation. He posited a stem *arpuwar/arpuwan- with heteroclitic inflection, which conforms well with the consistent spelling with singleton -n- and the abstract meaning (for outdated suggestions, see  under Meaning).
