1.1.4Meaning
On contextual grounds, GIŠariyala AD.KID has been translated as ‘baskets made of wickerwork’, yielding for ariyal- the simple meaning ‘basket’ (van Brock 1962a:101, HW 2nd ed. A:295f., Starke 1990a:302, CLL:27). Starke 1990a:302f. brings further evidence for the meaning by deriving it etymologically from CLuw. ari(ya)- ‘to raise, carry’; see under Stem.

1.1.5Stem
Starke 1990a:302f. treats ariyal- as a Luwian instrument noun in -al- n. derived from the verb ari(ya)- ‘to raise, carry’ (followed by Melchert 2003b:197). However, the recognition of two lexemes by Sasseville 2021a:21f., leads to two possibilities: ariyal- is either derived from āri-(ti) ‘to raise’, or from ariya-(ti) ‘to carry’. Both options are morphologically and semantically possible.

1.1.6Origin
The Luwian origin of ariyal- supported by its formation in -al- n. (whereas Hittite would show -ali- n.) has found consensus; see Starke 1990a:302f., Rieken 1999a:448, Melchert 2003b:197. Puhvel (HED A:126) and Melchert 2005a:448 also point out the Old Hittite attestation ariyalli- n. (KUB 36.104 rev. 6), which however shows the Hittite suffix -alli- n. (<< *-ó-dhlo-; parallel to Hitt. -ulli- n. << *-ú-dhlo-; see Melchert 1999e:368, Rieken 2009b:151f., Melchert 2014d:210 and Rieken 1994a:49). Therefore, ariyalli- n. should be considered a genuine Hittite formation built independently from Luwian ariyal- n. No Luwian influence needs to be assumed here; pace Melchert 2005a:448.
