1.1 Luwian in Hittite transmission
ariyatt(i)-
1.1.1Transmission
This lexeme is attested in the treaty between Tudḫaliya IV. and Kurunta of Tarḫuntašša and also in cult inventory texts. It is also found as the name of a town in Hittite transmission (Land-grant by Tutḫaliyas IV to Šaḫurunuwa), i.e. URUa-ri-ia-at-ta-aš-ša (KUB 26.43 obv. 48).

The attestation in KUB 26.43 has been taken as the name of a mountain, although there is considerable space between ḪUR.SAG and a-ri-ia-at-ti-i[n], opening up the possibility of seeing ḪUR.SAG as a genitive complement of LÚE.NU.UN, i.e. LÚE.NU.UN ḪUR.SAG ‘mountain watch’ (see Tischler 2008a:248). Moreover, the accusative singular a-ri-ia-at-ti-i[n] with the meaning ‘accumulation of small livestock’ is the only candidate as the direct object of e-ep-zi in this case, for which an appellative makes more sense (contra Imparati 1974a:26f., Starke 1979a:253 n. 27).

1.1.3Graphic Features
Checked against the photographs in the Konkordanz (Mainzer Fotoarchiv). In HW 2nd ed. A:297,
a-ri-ia-ta-ti is rendered as 20 a-ri-ia-ta-ti, later corrected by Otten 1988a:48, who points out that the two wedges must be read as Glossenkeile. The word on obv.? 10’ is read as the sign 〈ga〉 instead of 〈ta〉. The attestation on rev.? 12’ has the sign 〈er〉, which must be a mistake for 〈ri〉, as assumed in HW 2nd ed. A:297.

1.1.4Meaning
The meaning of ariyatt(i)- can be deduced from the well-preserved context of Bo 86/299, for which Otten 1988a:48 posits the meaning ‘(Vieh-)Aufkommen’ (‘accumulation of livestock’), pointing out that it always occurs in connection with sheep and cattle. This meaning is adequate in all contexts, even in KUB 26.43 obv. 18, in which ariyatt(i)- is the direct object of lē kuiški ēpzi ‘none shall seize’. Therefore, the meaning ‘elevation, mountain’ for ariyatt(i)- is hereby rejected (contra Starke 1979a:253 n. 27, CLL:27).
