1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation
The phonological interpretation of this verb is reasonably certain. Taken together with the likely cognate CLuw. GIŠḫuḫurpāl- (cf. Melchert, pers. comm.; Rieken 1999a:452-454), the HLuw. spelling is as clear as is possible within the strictures of the writing system.
The present lexeme makes use of one of the two visually distinct PUGNUS compounds that exist, cf. Payne 2019b:74; in this case the ligature might best be indicated as PUGNUSxPUGNUS (sign *31),This used to be read LIGARE and, earlier still, VERBERARE, but is now more often transcribed according to its actual shape as consisting of two signs PUGNUS. as the fists appear crossed; it is also used with the verb /hishi(ya)-/ ‘to bind’ and the noun /ikkar(i)-/ ‘peasant, serf’.

1.1.4Meaning
The meaning is assigned tentatively to this verb, because neither are the meanings of its cognates fully clear, nor does its context of attestation provide a good basis; indeed,Hawkins 1980a:153 deemed the contexts of the word family too unclear for determining a meaning. Still, use of the logographic determinative PUGNUSxPUGNUS with its two crossed forearms and fists suggests a meaning in the domain of submission as in the verb /hishi(ya)-/ ‘to bind’ and the indentured status of /ikkar(i)-/ ‘peasant, serf’ (for the latter see [
In ALEPPO 2, §6, the author outlines his continued protection by the gods he has called on before: wa/i-ta PRAE-na ARHA (PUGNUS+PUGNUS)hu-hu+ra/i-pa-ti-i, approx. /wa=ada=tta parran ahha huhurpanti/, meaning ‘(And those who are … of beasts to me), they (scil. the aforementioned gods) will catch (?) them before’ (cf. Hawkins 2000a:236, Payne 2019b:75). Further textual evidence may result in a fine-tuning of the assigned semantics.

1.1.5Stem
The stem class of this verb does not become clear based on the single occurrence attested so far. A 3pl. pres. ind. act. ending in /-anti/ can be found with verbs in /-a-(ti)/, /-a(i)-(di)/, /-a-(i)/, and with root verbs with or without lenited endings (cf. Sasseville 2021a:20, 82, 259, 289, 342), and a further analysis will therefore require additional paradigmatic data.
