1.1.2Forms

part. acc. sg. c. /warpammin/ ARMA-pa-mi-NEG3 TOPADA, §22 (Tabal)

It is not entirely clear in TOPADA §22 whether or not the sign NEG3 (*332c) is to be assigned to the present lexeme or should be seen as independent of it, cf. the discussion in the spelling below.

1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The phonological interpretation of this lexeme is reasonably certain in that the logogram ARMA (*273) is strongly associated with the word family around /warp(i)-/ ‘weapon, tool’, and the following syllabic sign <pa> further strengthens the case. Regarding the ending of the word, however, there has been some discussion among scholars. Thus, Hawkins 2000a:458 advocates reading the sign NEG3 (*332c) /na/ and seeing it as part of an acc. sg. c. case ending, much in the same way the very similar sign NEG2 (*332b), which also has the syllabic value <>, is used in several cases in TOPADA. Weeden 2010a:54 incl. f. 93 regards NEG3 as separate from the present lexeme and interprets it as the negative particle, while analysing the resulting /warpammi/ as the nom./acc. pl. n. of the participle /-mma/i-/, which he deems to be an i-stem.

1.1.4Meaning

The meaning suggested for this lexeme is based both on the context it appears in as well as its assumed link to the word family around /warp(i)-/ ‘weapon, tool’. In its textual context, /warpamma/i-/ seems to describe the fighting power provided to the author of the inscription by the MAGNUS-zi/a EQUUS(ANIMA)-zi/a, i.e. /urazzanzi azzuwassinzi/ ‘the generals of the horse guard’, i.e. ‘armed’. Because of its context, it is unlikely that /warpamma/i-/ could instead be linked to the verb /warp-?/ ‘to lock, to imprison (?)’.

[AH.B.]

1.1.5Stem

The word appears to be a participle in /-mma/i-/, showing i-mutation as expected. Its inflectional base can be assumed to be either /warp-(ti)/, /warpa-(i)/ or /warpa-(ti)/, a verb otherwise unattested in HLuw., but which would fit well into the word family around the noun /warp(i)-/ ‘weapon, tool’.
