The morphological analysis follows Laroche 1960c:84. That of ar-zi-ia-aš-ša published later is based on the preceding word numun-šú ‘its seed’, which provides a semantically suitable head noun ‘the seed of/belonging to cultivated land’.

1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation
Following Melchert 1994a:272, a sporadic epenthesis of /t/ is found in /rs/ sequences. It is remarkable that the present lemma is consistent regarding this feature.

1.1.4Meaning
Laroche 1960a:84 was the first to offer a semantic interpretation for arziya-. It combines the information drawn from the cadasters, i.e. the fact that it denotes a kind of field, with that from ABoT 60 obv. 21f., in which a place is described as very important and a cultivated piece of land for the enemy: pé-da-an me-ek-ki na-ak-ki a-na LÚkúr-ia-aš ar-zi-ia-an “The place is very important, cultivated land for the enemy/ies.”The phonetic complement of a-na LÚkúr-ia-aš is not clear, because a nom. sg. c. pronoun =aš does not agree with the neuters pedan and arziyan, but likewise would a plural ending -yaš be unusual after the case classifier und not fully compatible with the lack of a plural determinative in LÚkúr; see HW 2nd ed. A:365. In addition, the likely relationship with Hitt. arši- ‘planting, cultivation’ certainly played a role. The translation is adopted in HW:392, HW 2nd ed. A:365, HED A, E, I:187, HEG A-K:75, HHw:s.v., Ünal 2007a:65, Rüster & Wilhelm 2012a:250; more generic CLL:33 (landscape feature).

1.1.5Stem
The nom. sg. in -iyan proves a neuter stem in -iya-. The suffix is added to the root arz- < *ars-.
[E.R.]
1.1.6Origin
On account of the genitival suffix -ašša/i-, the lexeme can be classified as Luwian beyond a doubt (Güterbock 1956a127; cf. also HED A, E, I:187: “Luwoid”, CLL:33, Melchert 2005a:451). However, HEG A-K:75 regards only the derived form arziyašša/i- as Luwian, but not its base.
[E.R.]
For the lemma head see Luw. ārš-(ti).
