1.1 Cuneiform Luwian

aršimānalli(ya)-

‘(unknown)’

1.1.1Transmission

The sole attestation of the word is found in a mixed Hittite and Luwian list of merisms that are part of a ritual incantation (NS).

1.1.2Forms

nom./acc. sg. n.

ar-ši-ma-na-al-li-ia-an

KBo 21.12, 15’

(CTH 767, NS)

MUNUSar-⸢si-ma-a⸣-[na-al-li-ia-an?

KBo 21.12, 27’

(CTH 767, NS)

Based on the parallelism of lines 13’-14’ and 25’-26’, it is not unlikely that also line 27’ contains an equivalent of line 15’ ⸢pa-ri-tar-wa-al-li-ia-an ar-ši-ma-na-al-li-ia-an. This is further supported by the position of the space between the two words in relation to the space in the respective preceding line. If correct, the reading -a]š MUNUSar-x x[ in Starke 1985b:375 can be adjusted to [ḫar-pa-na-al-li-ia-a]n MUNUSar-⸢si-ma-a⸣-[na-al-li-ia-an. The alleged word-final -a]š looks more like the upper part of a vertical in any case.

1.1.4Meaning

Even with ḫarpanalliyan ‘rebellious, related to a rebel’ (see under Lemma) as a juxtaposed antonym, the meaning of (MUNUS)aršimānalliyan remains unclear. The word formation is of no help either.

1.1.5Stem

As pointed out in CLL:30, the stem is an -i(ya)- adjective derived from a substantivized adjective in -alla/i-.Outdated is the interpretation as substantive implied by Starke 1990a:232, followed in HW2 A:346, HHw:s.v., Ünal 2007a:61. Based on the admittedly unassured reading at KBo 21.12, 27’, the underlying word consists of a root arš- followed by a verbal or adjectival suffix -iya- + -ma- + -na- (because of the plene -a-, a -m(ma)n- suffix is less likely).

1.1.6Origin

An etymological connection with ārš-(ti) ‘to flow’ lacks contextual support.
