1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation
The phonological interpretation is partly tentative. While the link with /tanid-/ ‘stele, installation (?)’, /tanissa-(i)/ ‘to install’, and ultimately /ta-/ ‘to stand’ is evident, the attestations do not show the exact shape of the latter part of the stem, which may be /°d(i)-/ or /°di(ya)-/, cf. the discussion of the stem below.
[AH.B.]
1.1.4Meaning
Even though the word appears only twice and within the same text, its semantics are clear. The meaning was first suggested by Hawkins 1978a:115 on the basis of the context and found immediate acceptance among scholars, see e.g. Starke 1990a:207 and Melchert 1997d:48, cf. also Hutter 2003a:258. The clearer context occurs at TELL AHMAR 1, §24: *a-[mi-pa-wa/i]-mi-i-tú (“*314”)ka-pi-la-li-na (FILIA)tú-wa/i-tara/i-na (FEMINA.PURUS.INFRA)ta-ni-ti-na i-zi-i-wa/i-i, approx. /ammin=ba=wa=mi=du kappilallin tuwatrin tanidin izziwi/, meaning ‘I myself (will) make m[y] enemy’s daughter a hierodule for him (scil. the storm-god)’ (cf. Hawkins 2000a:241).
[AH.B.]
1.1.5Stem
Evidently a common gender, this noun is probably an adjectival derivation with /-i(ya)-/, subsequently substantivized, from the neuter noun /tanid-/ ‘stele, installation’; this derivational path has been assumed for CLuw. daniti(ya)- ‘(a kind of priestess)’, see Melchert 1997d:48. The phonological form would be /tanidi(ya)-/ or already shortened to /tanid(i)-/, although only further paradigmatic evidence can prove that.

1.2 Luwian in Hittite transmission
dāniti(ya)-
‘(a type of priestess)’1.2.1Transmission
This lexeme is attested in a variety of Hittite texts, i.e. in a text concerning the cult of Išḫara (CTH 641), a cult inventory (CTH 528) and fragments of various genres (CTH 590: dream and vow fragments, CTH 582: oracle fragments, CTH 470: ritual fragments, CTH 832: various fragments).

1.2.4Meaning
Starke 1990a:206f. provides a comprehensive analysis into the meaning of Luw. dāniti(ya)-. On KUB 40.2 rev. 35, the word is mentioned among various titles of religious officiants. Moreover, on KUB 56.19 ii 15f. and 27, a dāniti(ya)- is construed as being ‘for the Storm-God’. On the basis of these usages, it is most reasonable to assume that dāniti(ya)- refers to a type of priestess (female gender is assured by the ubiquitous determinative MUNUS). This meaning is likewise assumed in HEGT/1:106, CLL:205,Melchert 1997d:48f. and Hutter 2003a:258. Further supporting evidence is available in the HLuw. cognate /tanid(i)-/ ‘hierodule’.
[O.B.]
1.2.5Stem
Luw. dāniti(ya)- is a substantivized adjective in -i(ya)-, formed to a noun dānit- ‘(cult object)’ (Starke 1990a:206, Melchert 1997d:48).
For the dubious existence of an ultimate base *dān- ‘(type of ritual)’ cited in Starke 1990a:206 and CLL:204, see Stem under CLuw. tānit-.
[O.B.]
1.2.6Origin
This lexeme is assumed to be Luwian on account of being derived from a Luwian base with Luwian morphology and its HLuw. cognate (thus also in Starke 1990a:205ff.,CLL:205, Hutter 2003a:258).
[O.B.]
For the derivational base, see CLuw. dānit-.
