sebedi

1.1.1Transmission

This word is attested in the inscription of the inscribed pillar of Xanthos, dated contextually to shortly after the ascension of Artaxerxes II in 405-404 BCE and stylistically to around 400 BCE (Borchhardt & Eichner 1997-1999a:19f.).

1.1.2Forms

unclear sebedi TL 44c.54 (Xanthos)

Shevoroshkin 2002b:130, DLL:128 and Schürr 2016d:169 see in sebedi a verb of the 3sg. pres. act., which is possible but not the only option. Sasseville 2021d suggests tentatively an ablative/instrumental, which would be syntactically fine. The word occurs after a list of towns that benefits from post-war amendments and gifts. Outdated Meriggi 1963a:15, who divides sebe=di seeing in *=di a reflexive particle.

1.1.3Meaning

Shevoroshkin 1971a:220 translates sebedi with “he sends”, but Shevoroshkin 2002a:214 opts for “he selects”; both are mere speculations. No meaning is provided here, though one should compare the perhaps related word [2121] sabadi.
