1.1.3Meaning
Neumann 2007a:390 connects the root tup- of tupazalije to Hitt. tuppi- ‘clay tablet’ and /tuppala-/ ‘scribe’. The underlying base *tupaza- would represent a professional title in -aza-, which would translate as ‘writer, scribe’. Gehrisch 2018a:48f. follows Neumann and translates the word as ‘functionary’. Despite Neumann’s attractive etymological connection, the context in which tupazalije occurs is too fragmentary to allow any verification of its semantics. Thus, no semantic assignment is given. The word is not listed in DLL:73.

1.1.4Stem
Contra Gehrisch 2018a:49, the ending -ije for an appellative can only indicate the dative plural of an adjective in -i(je)-. Thus, tupazali(je)- is derived from an non-attested noun *tupazala-, which in turn could be derived from a *tupaza- or *tupeze/i-. Further data is needed to verify this hypothesis.
