dat. sg. si〈j〉eẓi TL 5.9 (Telmessos)

1.1.3Graphic Features

The interpretation of the word is debated. The reading siezi follows Kalinka 1901a. Melchert (DLL:58) opens the possibility of reading τ?ezi instead, although the expected adjective in -eze/i- agreeing with hriqeri makes the former reading more attractive. Neumann 2007a:324 points out rightly that the glide j has been left out between the two vowels i and e, which is why it is restored here.

1.1.4Meaning

The adjective sijeze/i- modifies hriqeri. It is tempting to see, with Carruba 1968a:9 n. 11, a connection to the verb si- ‘to lie’, but this remains currently unprovable. Unclear Gehrisch 2018a:21f.

se=i nip!e : {a} tise hriqeri si〈j〉eẓi [ẽ]ṭṛi : ḥṛp̣pi tạ̃ṭu (TL 7-10)

‘They must not place anything on top of the lower sijezi hriqeri.’

Until further evidence emerges, no translation is suggested for Lycian A sijeze/i-.
