Checked against the photographs in the Mainzer Fotoarchiv, except for KUB 35.55, 6’. – The reading kar-aš-šu-u-ni at KUB 40.90 rev. 9’ (Hittite transmission) is considered to be erroneous for the Luwian 1pl. pres. act. /karssunni/ (Starke 1990a:307 n. 1050 and 456, CLL:102) or a Hittite 1pl. pres. act. kar-aš-šu-e-ni (CLL:102). Neither solution is convincing, but nor do the readings kar-aš-šu-u-i, kar-aš-šu-u-wi5 and kar-aš-šu-u-un fit the traces.

1.1.4Meaning
In analogy with Hitt. karš- ‘to cut, neglect’, Meriggi 1962c:260 suggested the same meaning for CLuw. karš-. The contextual evidence was not conclusive at that point in time, but as Melchert 1987a:189 pointed out, KBo 29.4 ii 3’-6’ (published in 1983) with the co-occurrence of Hitt. [ar]ḫa kur(a)škemi ‘I am cutting off’ (ibid. 3’) and CLuw. karsammiš (ibid. 5’ and 6’) would remove any remaining doubts. Even before, the proposed translation had been adopted in the handbooks and articles (HW:425 and Oettinger 1979a:201 with question mark, Kammenhuber 1959a:63, Starke 1990a:456, CLL:102, Oettinger 1992a:219, Melchert 1994a:232 and 251, Tischler 2008a:s.v., HED K:106, EDHIL:455, HW 2nd ed. K:197, Sasseville 2021a:265).

The 1sg. pres. act. karšui is diagnostic for a root verb, parallel to its Hittite match karš-(mi) (see Starke 1990a:456, Oettinger 1992a:219 and Sasseville 2021a:265).

1.3.4Meaning
The Palaic verb karš- is equated with Hitt. karš-(mi) ‘to cut (off)’ and translated accordingly (Kammenhuber 1959a:63, Carruba 1970a:58). Thanks to a new join made by Soysal 2017a, we now know that the direct object of karšandu is ginu- ‘leg (of an animal)’; =kan ginu=kat karšandu ‘they must cut off this leg here…’ (KUB 35.159 ii 8’ + DBH 46/2.101, 4’). This brings contextual support to the etymological approach. It is also noteworthy that Pal. karš- is used with the particle =kan.

1.3.5Stem
The verb karšandu is probably a root verb of the mi-conjugation by comparison with Hitt. karš-(mi) (beside karšiye/a-(mi)) and CLuw. karš-(ti) ‘to cut’. However, it should be emphasized that the Palaic imperative form in -andu does not guarantee the attribution to this verbal stem class and therefore more data is needed to be absolutely certain.

2. Reconstruction
2.1Reconstruction ‘to cut’
Comparing Hitt. karš-(mi) with Pal. karš- and CLuw. karš-(ti) ‘to cut’, a Proto-Anatolian root verb of the mi-conjugation can be reconstructed, i.e. *kérs-/kr̥s-´ ‘to cut’, whose root-final -s- is considered to be an “extension” (Oettinger 1979a:200f., HEG I-K:518, HED K:100-106, Melchert 1994a:232, EDHIL:455, Sasseville 2021a:265). Both Proto-Anatolian sequences *-érs- and *-r̥s- yield the same outcome Cun. -arš-, which is why no synchronic ablaut can be seen. Furthermore, Hittite shows a parallel deradical formation in *-i̯e/o-, i.e. karšiye/a-(mi), although no traces of this formation has been identified so far in other Anatolian languages.

3. Proto-Indo-European
3.1Semantic Reconstruction
PIE *kers- means ‘to cut (off)’, according to LIV²:355f. Furthermore, LIV²:356 n. 1 opts to separate *kers- from *(s)kers- ‘to scratch, card (wool)’ (LIV²:559 s.v.) for semantic reasons. However, as further argued in LIV²:356 n. 1, *kers- might be an s-extension of the root PIE *(s)ker- ‘to shear, scratch, cut off’ (LIV²:556f. s.v.).
3.2Morphological Reconstruction
According to LIV²:355f., verbal reflexes of PIE *kers- ‘to cut (off)’ can be found in Anatolian and Tocharian: a root aorist PIE *kérs-/*kr̥s-´ lives on in PAnat. *kérs-/*kr̥s-´ ‘to cut’ (Hitt. karš-(mi), Pal. karš-, CLuw. karš-(ti), see above sub PAnat. Reconstruction) and is also the basis of TochAB kärs(ā)- ‘to know, understand, recognize’ (semantic path: ‘to cut off’ → ‘to distinguish’ → ‘to understand, know’, cf. LIV²:356 n. 3 with lit.). In addition, Hittite has a i̯e/o-present karšiye/a-(mi) ‘to cut’; Lyd. karše‑(d) ‘to cut off’ was formerly interpreted as continuing an iterative formation *kors-éi̯e/o-, cf. LIV²:356 with n. 5 and lit. However, according to Sasseville 2021a:206–214, the Lydian stems in ‑e‑(d) are denominative in terms of their origin. TochB kärstā- ‘to cut off, destroy’, TochA kärṣtā- ‘id.’ are based on a dental extension of PIE *kers-, with LIV²:356 questioningly reconstructing a preform *kérs-dhe-. Malzahn 2010a:583, however, assumes “[a] denominative to an abstract in *-teh2- from PIE *√kers”. Further derivatives of *kers- come from Greek, with, e.g., Gk. κουρά f. ‘cropping (of hair, beard or wool); etc.’ < PGk. *korsā́- < pre-PGk. *kors-éh2- ‘cutting’; for further forms, cf. sub Transmission above. – As argued in LIV²:356 n. 1, PIE *kers- is likely to reflect an s-extended form of the s-mobile root *(s)ker- ‘to shear, scratch, cut off’ (LIV²:556f. s.v.). Further potentially extended roots that are based on *(s)ker- and listed in LIV² are *(s)kerH- ‘to separate, split, divide’ (LIV²:558 s.v.), *skerdh- ‘to cut, stab’(?) (LIV²:558 s.v.), *(s)kerp- ‘to cut off, pluck’ (LIV²:559 s.v.), and *(s)kert- ‘to cut (up)’ (LIV²:559f. s.v.).
