nom. or erg. pl. c. (?) wa-ni-ia-an-ti-in-zi KUB 35.91, 3’ (CTH 767, MS?)

Yakubovich 2017d:s.v. analyzes the form as an inflectional ergative plural. In the present lemma, a morphological interpretation as the nom. pl. of a derived stem waniyant(i)- is also considered.

1.1.4Meaning

The form wa-ni-ia-an-ti-in-zi, attested in a hopelessly fragmentary context, is followed in the next line by wa-ni-i-ti-i-iš ḫa-an-ti-iš, perhaps ‘front of a stone block/stele’. Laroche (in DLL:106) identifies the stem waniyant(i)- with that of wanīti(ya)- and lists both under the heading wani(ya)nt- together with the word for ‘stone block, stele’ (noted as wa(n)ni-), but without translation. In contrast, Melchert (CLL:256) separates the items and derives waniyant(i)- from uwaniya-, but Melchert, too, does not try to translate the word. Carruba 1982a:44 (cited in HEG U-Z:282) seems to analyze the stem in -nt(i)- as a lexicalized participle and translates ‘versteinert (?)’, whereas Tischler (HHw:s.v) arrives at ‘salzhaltig?, versteinert?’. Finally, a new alternative is offered by Yakubovich 2017d:s.v., who interprets the word as an ergative form and is therefore not forced to posit another stem distinct from uwaniya-. However, the common gender of the noun uwaniya- is hard to reconcile with an ergative and, thus, it would have to come from a neuter stem *wani(ya)-; see below.

1.1.5Stem

As pointed out above, the form can be interpreted as the nom. or erg. pl. of a stem waniyant(i)-, derived either from the stem waniya- or belonging directly to *wani(ya)- (attested in the HLuw. nom./acc. sg. (“STELE”)wa/i-ni-za /wanin=za/).
