1.1.3Meaning

The word tewinaza denotes the title of the owner of the tomb. Lebrun 1999a:53 suggests the meaning ‘seer’, considering the etymological link to the word for ‘eye’ (see Lyc. A tawa-). The HLuw. comparison with ta4-wa/i-ni- (thus DLL:64, Melchert 2003a:181 n. 12) is no longer tenable, see Rieken & Yakubovich 2010a:201. Heubeck 1989a:46, Gehrisch 2018a:175 and Christiansen 2020a:244 leave tewinaza untranslated. Despite the attractive suggestion of Lebrun, the semantics of tewinaza- cannot be contextually verified, and  it is therefore left untranslated here as well.

1.1.4Stem

The word is an agent noun formation in -aza- derived from a base *tewin-. It is tempting to see a verbal suffix *-in- (corresponding to CLuw. -ina-(i)), derived from the root verb tewe-(ti) ‘to see’. For other etymological suggestions that do not yield any satisfying results, see Neumann 2007a:354 and Gehrisch 2018a:175f.
