/ununu(wa)-(i)/, “X”(-)u-nú-nú-

‘(unknown)’

1.1.1Transmission

This hapax is attested in a single inscription from Tabal, dating to perhaps the late 8th century BCE.

1.1.2Forms

1sg. pret. ind. act. /ununuhha/ “X”(-)u-nú-nú-ha HİSARCIK 2, §1 (Tabal)

Whether the reading is indeed 〈-nú-nú-〉 is somewhat doubtful. While the single strokes amount to 18 altogether, i.e. 2 x 9 with the numeral logogram 9 also read 〈nú〉, they are arranged in consecutive rows of 6 and do not show any conceivable separation into two signs 〈nú〉. The inscription shows no other instance of merging signs, on the contrary, AUDIRE.MI is separated and in no way ligaturised. Visually, this leaves 6+6+6 and could hence represent something entirely different (the numeral logogram 6 is not fixed with a syllabic reading at present).

1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The phonological interpretation is entirely provisional and solely based on what amounts to a tentative interpretation of the attested spelling, cf. the remarks under Forms above. If the reading of the signage is correct, the suggested phonological form is the most straightforward interpretation.

1.1.4Meaning

While its interpretation as a verb is reasonably certain within the context, the meaning of this word is unknown, because the relevant clause in HİSARCIK 2, §1 is fragmented. It runs: EGO?-mi? ha-[ ...] DEUS?.SOL?-x-si?-na ha+ra/i-ha+r[a/i-...] MONS-ti-i “˹X˺”(-)u-nú-nú-ha ADORARE? AUDIRE.MI ka-ru-pa-ni-za, but remains without a translation.

1.1.5Stem

The verb may be a stem in /-nu(wa)-(i)/, which would suggest a causative or factitive meaning, cf. Sasseville 2021a:462-364. While it looks like the word could be related to the adverb /unun/ ‘now’, the fact that no meaning can be assigned on the basis of the attested form renders any such suggestion entirely hypothetical.
