1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation
The phonological interpretation of this lexeme is reasonably certain due to its transparent morphology, see the discussion of the stem below. Within HLuw., it is related to the adjective /mashunalla/i-/ ‘of prosperity’, and beyond that to CLuw. mašḫāḫit- (translated as ‘growth, prospering’ Starke 1990a:167f.) and Hittite māi-/-i(ya)-(ḫi) ‘to grow’ (see already Starke 1979a:258f. incl. n. 55).

1.1.4Meaning
The meaning assigned to this verb was first suggested by Starke 1979a:258f. based on both the context and the etymology of the word, cf. the discussion of the stem below. Meriggi 1967b:119 had previously suggested ‘to favour’ vel sim., which was a first step in the right direction. In the context of the inscription, SULTANHAN, §22 introduces a string of clauses expressing hopes for a divine blessing and good yields from a vineyard: a-wa/i TONITRUS-hu-za-sa za-´ tu-wa/i+ra/i-sà-zá ma-sa-ha-ni-i-ti, approx. /a=wa Tarhunzas za tuwarisan=za mashanitti/, meaning ‘Tarhunza will make this vineyard grow(?)’ (see Morpurgo Davies & Hawkins 1987a:275 and Hawkins 2000a:466).
[AH.B.]
1.1.5Stem
The verb belongs to the stems in /-i-(ti)/ and derives from the unattested noun */masha-/, originally suffixed with /-ani-/, see Sasseville 2021a:150f. Starke 1979a:258f. incl. n. 55 points out the etymological relationship with Hittite māi-/-i(ya)-(ḫi) ‘to grow’, which is however not entirely certain, see CLuw. mašḫāḫi(t)-.
