1.1.4Meaning

The subject of the verb šannar is the bull running up the sky. The action expressed by sannar occurs after the bull has been wrestled down, but before it is bound. The meaning of the verb can be drawn from the etymological comparison with Hittite šanna-/šann-(ḫi) ‘to hide, conceal’. Therefore, we may understand that the bull is covered or hidden.

2. Reconstruction

2.1Reconstruction ‘to hide, conceal’

The comparison between Hittite šanna-/šann-(ḫi) ‘to hide, conceal’ and Palaic šannar ‘he is covered, hidden (?)’ allows for the reconstruction of the Proto-Anatolian verb: Oettinger 1979a:159f. (see also HEG S:809) already reconstructed a nasal infix verb on the basis of Hittite alone, i.e. *sn̥-né-H-/*sn̥nH-´. This is approximately followed by Kloekhorst (EDHIL:719), who however reconstructs a root final *-h1 instead *-h2 as per Oettinger, which he would expect to be retained. This must not be the case, since root-final laryngeals are regularly dropped before the endings in verbal formations. Contra Puhvel (HED S:115f.), the presence of a laryngeal is necessary to account for the shape of the verb. The postulation of a root-final *h1 forces the reconstruction of a nasal infix verb with o-ablaut, whereas a *h2 or *h3 would account for the coloring of the vowel of the nasal suffix of the strong stem within a regular ablauting n-infix verb, i.e. *-né-/-n-´. For the Proto-Indo-European etymology, see PAnat. *sEn(H)-.
