pibere

‘(unknown)’

1.1.1Transmission

This lexeme is found in the inscription of the inscribed pillar of Xanthos, dated contextually to shortly after the ascension of Artaxerxes II in 405-404 BCE and stylistically to around 400 BCE (Borchhardt & Eichner 1997-1999a:19f.).

1.1.2Forms

dat./loc. pl.(?) pibere TL 44b.36 (Xanthos)

1.1.3Graphic Features

Schürr & Dönmez 2015a:139 (following Schürr 2012a:117) analyze the sequence sebepibere as se=b(e) epibere instead of se=be pibere. and while this analysis is not impossible, it cannot be verified either. Until further evidence is found, the word will remain to be analyzed as pibere by default. Any relationship to the verb pibije-(ti) ‘to give’ (as implied in Shevoroshkin 1971a:234 n. 14) is possible but remains obscure due to the uncertainty of the word formation underlying pibere.

1.1.4Meaning

No semantic assignment for Lyc. A pibere has so far been provided in the dictionaries (cf. DLL:49, Neumann 2007a:268). Neumann (ibid.) points out the similarity between the punerebe and pibere, which occur within the same line.
