1.1.2Forms

3sg. pres. med. kspλtaλ LW 11.4 (Sardis)

The form was originally taken as a dative singular, which is formally possible (Gusmani 1964a:155, Schürr 2003b:116). However, following the discovery of medio-passives in -taλ (Melchert 2006b), this grammatical assignment makes better sense of the sentence: kspλtaλ is the finite verb, on which the infinitive fapaλkol depends (Sasseville 2021a:288, pace Melchert 2006b:1165 n. 18).

1.1.3Graphic Features

The sequence kspλ- is phonologically very dubious, also from a metrical perspective (cf. Gusmani 1975c:265, Eichner 1987a:87, Eichner 1993a:117, Gérard 2005a:46 n. 210). An emendation is probably necessary, but without a second attestation, it is impossible to know how to emend. Some possibilities are {k}spλtaλ or i!spλtaλ (prothetic i- before the root spλ-), or even ksa!λtaλ. Pending further evidence, the form will be left as it is.
