kuti
‘(unknown)’1.1.1Transmission
This lexeme is found in the inscription of the inscribed pillar of Xanthos, dated contextually to shortly after the ascension of Artaxerxes II in 405-404 BCE and stylistically to around 400 BCE (Borchhardt & Eichner 1997-1999a:19f.).

1.1.3Graphic Features
The sequence sxxaijakuti is written in a single string of letters, although it has been convincingly analyzed as sxxaija (adjectival formation in -ai(je)- in neuter plural) and kuti (still hesitant Melchert (DLL:119), Neumann 2007a:179, Schürr 2018b:70).

1.1.4Meaning
The word kuti occurs only once in an obscure passage, which makes a reliable analysis difficult. Shevoroshkin 1971a:211 suggests the meaning ‘wall’ and Neumann 2007a:179 compares Hitt. kutt- c. ‘wall’. Shevoroshkin 2002a:228 equates it instead with Lyd kot and translates it with ‘when, if’. The interpretation as a conjunction is attractive, especially since it occurs before a verbal form. Nonetheless, further evidence is needed.
