1.1.2Forms
| unclear | aλtokad | LW 10.14 (Sardis) |
The lexical category of the word has been debated. While Meriggi 1935a:100 regards it as an adverb meaning ‘now (?)’ (partly followed by Carruba 1960a:40, who sees an ablative (‘aus Gütigkeit’ in Carruba 1969a:74), and by Yakubovich pers. comm. who suggests the meaning ‘afterwards’), Gusmani 1964a:57 sees a substantive in the nom./acc. sg. n. (followed by Melchert 1994a:274, Gérard 2005a:107; Probert 2018a:376 leaves it open) and Sasseville 2021a:107 sees a denominative verb in -a-(d) (implying an asyndetic relationship with the verbal form kot). The abstract suffix -oka- is known from the noun šaroka- ‘protection’, which would point towards an abstract noun (modified by qid) or a verbal derivative as a more attractive explanation than the adverbial interpretation. That leaves a few options available, and only the emergence of more evidence can help us make a qualified decision.
