| 1sg. pret. ind. act. | /kuttassariHa/ | SCALPRUM-sa5+ra/i-ha | KARKAMIŠ A11a, §16 (Karkamiš) |
A further attestation may belong here: 〈MAGNUS.SCALPRUM+ra/i〉 in TÜRKMEN-KARAHÖYÜK 1, §4; judging by the context, it may be a participle, i.e. /kuttassarimma/i-/ ‘strong-walled’, see Goedegebuure et al. 2020a:38, but the spelling is too vague to add it to the above list without further corroborating evidence.

1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation
The phonological interpretation is reasonably certain and relies on that of its derivational base, the noun /kuttass(a)r(i)-/ ‘orthostat’. The link is supported not only by the spelling attested in KARKAMIŠ A11a, §16, but also by the fact that the noun /kuttassar(i)-/ occurs twice in the same text.

1.1.4Meaning
The meaning for this verb was suggested by Hawkins 2000a:95, 98, who used the translation “orthostated” for KARKAMIŠ A11a, §16, which runs: a-wa/i za-ia “PORTA”-na SCALPRUM-sa5+ra/i-ha, approx. /a=wa zaya hilana kuttassariHa/, meaning ‘I furnished these gates with (an) orthostat(s)’.
If the form 〈MAGNUS.SCALPRUM+ra/i〉 in TÜRKMEN-KARAHÖYÜK 1, §4 (or 5?) should belong to the present lemma, the semantics of the verb may also be more general. Goedegebuure et al. 2020a:38 point out that the verb probably also denotes a strengthening of walls, since affixing orthostats to existing walls has that effect. Peker 2020a:250 disagrees with Goedegebuure´s assessments and instead analyses the attestation as belonging to the noun /kuttass(a)r(i)-/ ´orthostat´.
[AH.B.]
1.1.5Stem
The verb derives from the attested noun /kuttass(a)r(i)-/ (pace Starke 1990a:42 and Hawkins 2000a:98). Based on its single attestation, it cannot be assigned to a verbal stem class with certainty, because the form fits well with either /-i-(ti)/ or /-(a)i-(di)/, and both stem classes include denominal formations (see Sasseville 2021a:131-131 and 217-219).
