1.1.4Meaning
The lexeme is used as an epithet of DĀla-, the consort of the Tutelary Deity, in a long list of such epithets: DA-a-la-aš wa-˹ar˺-wa-an-ta-li-ia-aš. It follows the DA-a-la-aš gi-im-ma-ra-aš wa-aḫ-nu-w[a-a]n-da-aš (ibid. iii 42) “Āla- of the turned field”. If the latter can be interpreted as the “Āla- of the ploughed field” (contra McMahon 1991a:109), at least the epithet preceding warwantali(ya)- deals with agricultural aspects of the deity (aššattaš in the following line is semantically unclear). This renders very likely a connection with the derivatives of *warwa- ‘seed, progeny’, see under CLuw. warawalan(a)- (cf. Archi 1975a:97: “di colui che genera(?)”, followed in HEG U-Z:378: “vielleicht ‘für die Nachkommenschaft zuständig’ o.ä.”; differently McMahon 1991a:109 n. 122; no meaning in Ünal 2007a:792). The meaning assigned here, i.e. ‘related to reproduction’ vel sim., is kept very general at this point and awaits further evidence to narrow it down.

1.1.5Stem
The present form can be either the gen. sg. of a substantive in -iya- or the nom. sg. of an adjective in -i(ya)-. Since the most common sequence of derivational elements would include the base *warwa- + -(a)nt- (poss. adj.) + -ala- + -i(ya)- (adj.), the adjective is preferred here. Although nothing excludes assuming that the -i(ya)- adjective is further derived as a non-mutating abstract noun (c.), it is less economical.

1.1.7Origin
The lexemes derived from *warwa/i- are well attested in Luwian, and those found in Hittite transmission are at least partly marked by gloss wedges (
(
)warwalan(a)-) or feature Luwian endings (dat./loc. pl. PÚWarwataliyanza). Considering the fact that many of the epithets of the Tutelary Deity and his consort DĀla- are Luwian, it is very probable that warwantaliyaš is another instance of the same phenomenon. Further evidence can be used from the etymological perspective, see PAnat. *u̯r̥u̯-o-.
