eša-

‘to maintain (?)’

1.1.1Transmission

This lexeme is found in a decree composed by the Persian priest Mitridaštas, which has recently been dated to the fifth year following the fall of the Lydian empire, i.e. 542-541 BCE (Euler & Sasseville 2019a:134f.).

1.1.2Forms

3sg. pres. act. pλeša(d/t) LW 23.16 (Sardis)

1.1.3Graphic Features

Based on the context, a verbal form in -at or -ad is expected for pλeša- (Gusmani 1961a:83 n. 76, Euler & Sasseville 2019a:132). The dental of the ending has dropped before the particle =k ‘and’, i.e. pλeša(d/t)=k.

1.1.4Meaning

Gusmani 1961a:83 n. 76 suggests on contextual grounds the meaning ‘to preserve, maintain’, i.e. pλeša=k dẽt tafaas aλas ‘and another tafaas-official will preserve the mobile wealth’ (followed by Dusinberre 2003a:230, Bouzid-Adler 2014a:14). While possible, it lacks independent support. The verb is left untranslated by Euler & Sasseville 2019a:132. What seems certain is that pλeša- represents an action performed by an official of the cult to the mobile wealth, which has been handed over to the cult by the Persian priest.

1.1.5Stem

The verb pλeša- can be best interpreted as a denominative verb in -a- (of the lenited or unlenited mi-conjugation?) with the preverb pλ-.
