1.1.2Forms

gen. adj. acc. sg. c. (?) pñtbahi TL 84.5 (Sura)

The grammatical assignment of the genitival adjective depends on whether it is taken to agree with the accusative hrm̃mã ‘temenos’ (thus Carruba 1977a:298, Neumann 2007a:278, Gehrisch 2018a:131) or the nominative or, even more likely, dative singular xruwi ‘?’ (cf. Melchert (DLL:51)). The agreement with the former is only possible, if hrm̃mã is a common gender stem as argued here (see under lemma). If it is a neuter as often found in the literature, the agreement of pñtbahi would not be possible. Neither proposal can be verified as long as the meaning of pñtbahe/i- eludes us.

1.1.3Meaning

Carruba 1977a:298 suggests an etymological connection with hppñterus- and sppñtaza-, which he translates as ‘sacrificer’, assuming the loss of the initial h- in pñtbahe/i-. This is rejected on phonological grounds by Melchert (DLL:51) and Neumann 2007a:278. Schürr 2010c:204 n. 30 (and Schürr 2016a:772) compares the Lycian personal name Πεδβεασας attested in Greek transmission, which, if the equation is correct, would confirm the veracity of the Lycian word, but does not shed any light on its semantics. It is left untranslated by Gehrisch 2018a:129.

1.1.4Stem

The word pñtbahe/i- is a genitival adjective derived from a noun pñtba- (< pñt- + -wa-). The element pñt- is also found in the ethnicon pñtrẽñne/i-, expressing the origin of a local precinct of Leto.
