1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation
The phonological interpretation of the present word is relatively secure, although the cognate HLuw. verb /asa-(i)/ ‘to sit’ (thus first proposed by Mittelberger 1963a:103 His reading followed the old interpretation of several signs, yet the vowel quality happened to be correct.) shows a different root vocalism. Hawkins 1980c:221 (repeated in Hawkins 2000a:488) connects it to a Luwian root */is-/ ‘to sit’ as discussed in Starke 1990a:239.
The use of the sign 〈sà〉 instead of any of the other SA signs indicates that the sibilant was pronounced /ʃ/, although the relevant orthographic convention was no longer applied reliably by the 8th century BCE, see Rieken 2010b:658f.

1.1.4Meaning
The meaning of the lexeme is generally clear, not least because of the way it is written. With respect to the logogram used, LECTUS (sign *301), Hawkins 2000a:488 remarks aptly that it depicts very clearly the denoted object of a piece of furniture to rest on, i.e. a couch, less likely an actual bed. The assigned meaning is therefore based on the context, the etymological link with the verb /asa-(i)/ ‘to sit’, and the graphemic rendition of the word. In KULULU 2, §3, the context runs thus: wa/i-ta á-mi-ia-za-i (“LECTUS”)i-sà-na-za “EDERE”-tà-mi-i-sa u-wa/i-mi-i-sá *462-ti-i (DEUS)sà-ta-ti-i ARHA (“MORI”)wa/i+ra/i-ha-a, approx. /wa=tta ammiyanz isananz adammis uwammis muwassadi Santadi ahha walahha/ ‘I died on my couches eating and drinking with/by (the grace of) potent (god) Santa’ (cf. Hawkins 1980c:221f.).

1.1.5Stem
The present noun is a deverbal formation in /-an-/ (cf. e.g. Melchert 2003b:197). It is not directly based on the HLuw. verb /asa-(i)/ ‘to sit’, but instead on the CLuw. athematic verb /is-(ti)/ ‘to sit’ (Sasseville 2021a:264f.). The root verb has so far gone unattested as such in HLuw., but it clearly also served as the basis for the verb /isnu(wa)-(i)/ ‘to seat, settle’.
