1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The phonological interpretation of this lexeme is tentative, and an earlier suggestion by Hawkins 1975a:143 was /partuni-/. However, the HLuw. spelling leaves some room for interpretation, and other possibilities are /pariTuNi-/, with the cover symbols /T/ and /N/ representing a dental and nasal respectively of unclear quality.

On the graphemic level, the verb is determined with the logogram CULTER (sign *338), which depicts a knife and is used only with this word. The etymological connections of this word are largely unclear, but see the discussion of the stem below.

1.1.4Meaning

Although attested twice, the present lexeme occurs in only one inscription within the lengthy apodosis of a curse formula towards the end of the text. The clauses detail the punishment to be inflicted on anyone who damages the building or the orthostats with the inscription, and this context, which is very similar to MARAŞ 4, §5, allowed Hawkins 1975a:143f. to infer the meaning ‘to sever’ and assign the reading CULTER to sign *338. The passage in KARKAMIŠ A11b+c, §§26-27 runs: *a-wa/i-tú VIR-ti-ia-ti-ia-za-ha (“CULTER”)pa+ra/i-tú-ní-tú-u FEMINA-ti-ia-ti-ia-za-ha-wa/i-tú-u (“CULTER”)pa+ra/i-tú-ni-i-tú, approx. /a=wa=du zidiyadiyan=za=ha par(r)it(t)un(n)intu wanattiyadiyan=za=ha=wa=du par(r)it(t)un(n)intu/, meaning ‘From him may they sever also the male genital(s), (and) from her also the female genital(s)’ (cf. Hawkins 2000a:104).

1.1.5Stem

The verb may be a formation in /-i-(ti)/ (cf. Sasseville 2021a:131-133 for the stem class), but further data are needed to prove this. Likewise, it is possible but not provable, that the verb is based on the adverb /pari/ ‘before, out, forth’.
