1.1.3Meaning

The verb epirijeti is found in the apodosis of a curse formula protecting a grave. The action of the verb is to be applied to everything the potential offender would build in the future after paying a fee to the mother of the local precinct (differently Schürr 2004b:186f.). Torp 1901a:20 analyzes Lyc. epirijeti as a univerbation of epi + (e)rije-(ti), which is formally possible (thus also Gehrisch 2018a:150). Differently, Laroche 1958b:172 equates Lyc. epirijeti with Hitt. ḫappiriye/a-(mi) ‘to trade’ and thus translates the verb as ‘to sell’ (doubted by Carruba 1963a:387 n. 18 on phonological grounds, since Hitt. # = Lyc. #x). Kimball 1987a:187 overcomes the phonological obstacle by positing a different outcome of *h2 and *h3 in Lycian (followed by Melchert 1992b:47, Hajnal 1995a:58, 101f. n. 65, Rieken 1999a:317, Oettinger 2002a:97, rejected on contextual grounds and thus also phonologically by Rasmussen 1992b and Kloekhorst 2006a:102). Instead, Rasmussen (ibid.) suggests a univerbation made of epi + (e)ri + ije-(ti) (for which see Lyc. A ije-(ti) ‘to buy’ < ‘to take’). Sasseville 2021a:421-422 claims that the meaning ‘to sell’ or ‘to hand over’ is contextually appropriate, but that the phonological side is indeed difficult. He does not exclude the possibility of a univerbation of epi + irije-(ti), for which see irijẽm͂m.

1.1.4Stem

As argued in Sasseville 2021a:401-404, Lycian has two distinct classes of verbs, i.e. -i-(ti) and -ije-(ti), reflecting Hittite -iye/a-(mi) and -āi-/-i(ya)-(ḫi) respectively, which means that Lyc. epirije-(ti) cannot be morphologically equated with Hitt. ḫappiriye/a-(mi).

1.1.5Origin

Because of the uncertainty of the fate of initial *h3 in Lycian and of the synchronic data, no reconstruction is offered here; see under Meaning.
