1.1.4Meaning

The semantic interpretation of the noun nanuntarri(t)- ‘present’ (Starke 1990a:177; followed in CLL:155) is based on its pairing with puwatilza ‘past’ to form a merism, and its transparent derivational history, for which see under Stem.

[E.R.]

1.1.5Stem

The nom./acc. sg. n. form in -iša points to an -i(t)- abstract noun. Starke’s 1990a:177, 366 analysis of the word starts out from nanuntarri(ya)-, an appurtenance adjective in -i(ya)-, which, in turn, is a -tarr- (< *-téro-) derivative of the adverb nānun ‘now’. Thus: nānun ‘now’ →  nānun-tarr- n.  ‘the present’ →  nānuntarr-i(ya)- ‘present (adj.)’ → nānuntarri(ya)-i(t)- n. ‘present’ (accepted in CLL:155).
