1.1.2Forms

3pl. pret. act. /haPa-x-halainta/ ha-pa(-)x(-)ha-la-i-ta MARAŞ 1, §7 (Maraş)

Hawkins 2000a:263f. notes that it is also possible to parse the string of signs in MARAŞ 1, §7 as two words: /hapa/, which he regards as possibly related to /hab(i)-/ ‘river’, and /x-halai(n)ta?/, connecting it tentatively to a similarly broken verb in MARAŞ 4, §7.

1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The phonological interpretation of this lexeme is largely unclear, not only because its only attestation in MARAŞ 1, §7 partly illegible. So far, it could not be linked to any cognates that could aid in the interpretation. The only part to be reasonably clear is the ending /-ainta/ with the /n/ omitted as is usual in HLuw. orthography (cf. Melchert 2003b:182; see the discussion of the stem below).

1.1.4Meaning

The verb occurs in one of the shorter clauses in MARAŞ 1, §7: wa/i-mu! (“IUSTITIA”)tara/i-wa/i-na+ra/i ha-pa(-)x(-)ha-la-i-ta, i.e. approx. /wa=mu tarrawannadi haPa-x-halainta/, meaning ‘They (scil. the aforementioned gods) h.-ed me by (my?) loyalty’. It is likely that the verb denotes a positive action of the gods, but the meaning cannot be pinpointed with any precision.

1.1.5Stem

While the meaning of this verb remains obscure, its attested form in MARAŞ 1, §7 is easy to assign to a verbal stem class. The overtly spelt 3pl. pret. act. ending 〈°a-i-ta〉 can only be interpreted as /-ainta/, which is a hallmark of the class in /-(a)i-(di)/, see Sasseville 2021a:218f.[It is marginally possible that it belongs instead to the class in /-a(i)-(di)/, see the discussion of said class by [10630]Sasseville 2021a:80-83. However, nothing can at present be said about its derivational base or indeed the possible semantic content of the stem formation in the present case.
