1.1.3Meaning

The word hrm̃muwe has been interpreted as a personal name (Neumann 2007a:102, Schürr 2013d:267), although there is no cogent contextual evidence for it. The fragmentary state of the context prevents a proper analysis, although it is worth noting that hrm̃muwe is preceded by the genitival adjective of a noun [ … ]t[.]ahi, which it is likely to agree with. If this is the case, hrm̃muwe cannot be a personal name, but must be a substantive in -e- c. An etymological connection with hrm̃ma- ‘temenos’ is very likely, but that still does not shed any light on what a derivative in -we- c. could mean.

1.1.4Stem

The noun hrm̃muwe- c. is most likely derived from hrm̃ma- with the suffix -we- c. For derivatives in -we- see Lyc. B lijenuwe- c. ‘nympheum’. Differently, Schürr 2013d:267 analyzes it as a compound hr (< hri) + muwe-, although  a syncope of -i- in hri is unexpected, because the -i- is otherwise present in compounds with hri-. That renders his morphological interpretation less attractive. The use of Lycian personal names attested in Greek inscriptions (in this case Ερμοας) do not tell us anything about the Lycian morphological origin of the word and, therefore, they cannot be used as an argument (contra Schürr 2013d ibid.).
