1.1.1Transmission

This lexeme is found in various grave inscriptions as well as on the inscribed pillar of Xanthos, dated contextually to shortly after the ascension of Artaxerxes II in 405-404 BCE., and stylistically to around 400 BCE (Borchhardt & Eichner 1997-1999a:19f.).

1.1.2Forms

abl./instr. qiqlẽniredi TL 44d.69 (Xanthos)

Formally, the word qiqlẽniredi could be a 3rd singular present of a verb in -e-(di). However, its appearance next to a verbal form in the imperative, i.e. xupdidu, does not support this interpretation. Therefore, an ablative-instrumental is more likely (thus also Neumann 2007a:302, DLL:127).

1.1.3Meaning

The word qiqlẽniredi is found in an obscure context. It seems to show agreement with the noun q!idrasadi (spelled xidrasadi), which may represent a deity (see Sasseville 2018a:309). If this is correct, qiqlẽniredi could be a divine epithet. Its reduplicated root qi-ql- has already been noticed in the literature (see most recently Shevoroshkin 2012a:473). Shevoroshkin (ibid.) suggests an etymological connection with Lyc. A qla- ‘precinct’, which is possible, but his semantic interpretation of qiqlẽniredi as ‘accumulation’ lacks support. No secure meaning can be assigned.
