1.1.2Forms

acc. pl. Dza-ap-pa-an-za KUB 44.23 iv 12 (CTH 670, NS)

Although the verb of the sentence is expressed simply by KI.MIN ‘ditto’, it is clear that the drinking formula is meant, and that DALLATUM and Dzappanza are accusative objects of eku-/aku- ‘to drink’ (HEG W-Z:660f. with references).

1.1.4Meaning

The context of Dzappa- tells us little about the function of this deified device, except for the fact that it is paired with the Netherworld deity DALLATUM. The meaning ‘(deified) drain, sewer’ suggested here is drawn from the Hittite equivalent Dzappa-, which is established as a term for a part of the house or a household device / instrument (see HEG U-Z:660f., Archi 1986a:340f., Torri 1999a:22, 127). The more precise meaning assignment of the Hittite word as ‘(deified) drain, sewer’ is based on its presumed connection with the root zapp- (in Hitt. zappiye/a- ‘to trickle, leak’, CLuw. zappa-(ti) ‘to make a flow (of liquid); to drain, let flow, to let bleed (?)’ etc.). Also Hittite Dzappa- is connected with the Netherworld in that it is attested in a ritual passage with a sacrifice for Lelwani = DALLATUM (CTH 609, IBoT 3.1 lower edge 41’-50’). Since drainage normally leads into the earth, i.e. the Netherworld, this is probably no accident, but may serve to support the semantic assignment.
