1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

Despite just a single attestation, the phonological interpretation for the present lemma is quite secure, because it belongs to the word family around HLuw. /ḫant(a)-/ ‘face’. The spelling shows the sign (*26), which is commonly found throughout the entire word family.

[AH.B.]

1.1.4Meaning

The present form has for a long time been regarded as another instance of HLuw. /hant(a)-/ ‘face’ (e.g. by Hawkins 2000a:383f.), but the context does not support such an interpretation. Instead, an analysis as an adverb seems indicated in the clause in KIRÇOĞLU, §3: wa/i-ma-sá (“FRONS”)ha-ta 1000 DOMUS-sa-ha i-zi-i-tà-ta-a, i.e. /wa=m(u)=as hanta 1000 parnassan=ha izidatta/, which Melchert 2011b:79f. translates as ‘She (scil. the queen) became the object of honour/worship before me and a thousand houses.’

[AH.B.]

1.1.5Stem

The word is derived from the HLuw. noun /hant(a)-/ ‘face’ and is an adverb in -a. For comparable adverbs cf. HLuw. /tarpa/ ‘aggressively’, see Yakubovich 2015b:section 6.6.
