1.1.2Forms

3sg. pret. ind. act.(?) sberide TL 44b.62-63 (Xanthos)

The grammatical analysis is tentative. Melchert (DLL:56) mentions the possibility of interpreting sberide as sberi + -de (particle). Neumann 2007a:310 suggests a dative singular, which is possible due to the rare occurrence of dative/locative singulars in -e. Neither suggestion can be excluded for now.

1.1.3Meaning

Eichner 1993a:145 n.128 suggests the meaning ‘to swear’ based on an etymological connection with Lyd. sfarwa- ‘oath(?)’; but cf. under lemma. The meaning suggested by Eichner is not impossible, but because of the obscurity of the context, it cannot be proven either.

1.1.4Origin

Eichner 1993a:145 n.128 points out that the phonology of the word sberide is Lycian B, because Lycian A would show the sound change *s > h; cf. hberus-. Therefore, sberide can be considered tentatively as a loanword from the Lycian B dialect.
