1.1.2Forms

nom.-acc. sg. n. u-wa-la-an-ta-li-ia-an KUB 32.81 + KUB 32.10, 6’ (CTH 761, MS?)
  [u-la-an-ta]-˹al˺-li-ia-an KUB 35.53, 13’ (CTH 758, NS)
    KUB 35.54 iii 5 (CTH 758, MS)
  [u-la-an-ta]-˹al-li-ia-an˺ KUB 32.14 + KUB 34.62, 11’ (CTH 761, NS)
  ú-la-an-ta-˹al-li-ia-an˺ KUB 35.43 ii 2 (CTH 761, NS)

The attestations follow CLL:251 (cf. also Laroche 1959a:120) checked against the photographs of the Konkordanz. The emendation u-wa-la-an-ta-‹al›-li-ia-an of Melchert is not followed here due to the existing inconsistencies in geminate spelling. Restorations follow Starke 1985b:64 (in KUB 35.53, 13’) and CLL:251 (in KUB 32.14 + KUB 34.62, 11’). As CLL:253 rightly points out on contextual grounds (and followed by Yakubovich 2010d:41f.), wa-˹al˺-[li]-ia-an in KUB 35.43 + KBo 29.55 iii 30’’ is probably a scribal error for walantalliyan due to the surrounding words ending in °walliyan (on this type of error called “error of attraction” in cuneiform [Akkadian] literacy see Worthington 2012a:109–111).

1.1.3Meaning ‘of the dead’

There is a general and justified agreement that this word means ‘of the dead’ as it appears in pair with ‘of the living’ (Carruba 1982a:46; Rizza 2007a:78; Yakubovich 2010d:40f; Hutter 2003a:262; Melchert 2006a:295 [contra CLL:251: ‘of a mortal’]; Tischler 2016a:416 [contra Tischler 2008a:217: ‘sterblich’]; accordingly, Laroche 1959a:120 [‘mortel’], Starke 1990a:392 [‘das Sterbliche’], and Marcuson 2016a:291 [‘of a mortal’] are imprecise; Ünal 2016a:974 did not assign any meaning).
