1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

Although the lexeme is a hapax legomenon in HLuw., its phonetic complements leave little doubt that it is cognate with CLuw. adāri(ya)- (see under lemma), which is attested a little more frequently.

[AH.B.]

1.1.4Meaning

While the exact meaning of the lexeme in HLuw. cannot be determined with certainty on the basis of a single occurrence, its basic meaning, i.e. a variation on ‘to eat’, seems assured by the use of the logogram EDERE and the fact that CLuw. features a direct cognate.

[AH.B.]

1.2 Cuneiform Luwian

adāri(ya)-

‘to feed’

1.2.1Transmission

Attested in different manuscripts of two Luwian rituals, viz. from the Kuwattalla tradition and the ritual of Zarpiya (from MS until NS).

  [a-]˹da˺-a-ri-it-ta KUB 35.15 ii! 2 (CTH 761, MS)

  a-ta-ri-ta-an HT 1 ii 8’ (CTH 394, NS)
  a-da-ri-da-˹an˺ CHDS 5.118 iv 5’ (CTH 757, NS)

The attestations follow CLL:40 and pers. comm. (cf. also Laroche 1959a:34), checked against the photographs of the Konkordanz (no photograph was available for Bo 5510, the reading of this fragment follows Görke 2015a:§20; it was later published as CHDS 5.118). Restorations are based on duplicate texts, see Starke 1985b:126f. The plene spelling in KUB 35.15 ii! 2 clearly shows that the stem is adāri(ya)-, i.e. with a real vowel (cf. also Tischler 2008a:32, Tischler 2016a:42 and esp. Sasseville 2018b:119 with n. 153), contra Starke 1985a:249 n. 1 (who even claims that “the Graphie a-t/da-ri- sichert die Lautung [adri̯i-]” (sic)); CLL:40 (ad(a)ri(ya)-, a view he does not share anymore, pers. comm.); Kloekhorst 2014b:574, and Ünal 2016a:949.

1.2.3Meaning ‘to feed’

There is a justified general agreement regarding the meaning of this word on contextual grounds (Laroche 1959a:34; Carruba 1968a:14; CLL:40; Tischler 2008a:32, Tischler 2016a:42; Görke 2015a:§20; Ünal 2016a:949).

1.3.1Literature / Comments

2. Reconstruction

2.1Reconstruction ‘to feed’

Comparing Hitt. ētriye/a-(mi) with CLuw. adāri-(ti) and HLuw. -tà-ri- /adari-(ti)/ all meaning ‘to feed’, a denominative verb in *-i̯é/ó- can be reconstructed for Proto-Anatolian, i.e. *h1ed-r-i̯é/ó-(ti). The derivational base is attested in Hittite as ētri- n. ‘food’ (< *h1éd-ro- n.; see Melchert 1993f). In Luwian, an abstract noun in -aḫit- n. derived from the expected nominal base */ad(a)r-/ is found, i.e. atraḫit- n. ‘nourishment’, whereas an a- (< *-eh2) or u-stem has been built in Lycian, see adru ‘bowl’. The Luwian vocalism in -ar- is explained by Melchert 1993f as a vocalization of the resonant following the syncope of the thematic vowel *-o- in post-tonic word-final position, i.e. */adar-/. The Cuneiform Luwian denominative verb adāri-(ti) (for expected *adri-(ti)) must have been reshaped in analogy to the derivational base.
