The five attestations of this lexeme are found in just three different texts, of which two are from the Karkamiš region and date to the 8th century BCE. The remaining inscription, PANCARLI, is possibly older by one or two centuries.

1.1.3Graphic Features
1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation
The spelling of the lexeme leaves little doubt as to its phonological interpretation as /azzalli(ya)-/. Yakubovich 2011a:261f. has shed light on how to interpret the endings, i.e. that those attestations showing 〈za〉 are regular nom. sg. with the neuter particle /-sa/, and that the forms ending in 〈sa〉, 〈sá〉 represent regular gen. sg.

1.1.4Meaning
The meaning of this lexeme was first suggested and discussed by Hawkins & Morpurgo Davies 1982a:97f., although the forms were not altogether correctly identified at the time. With his new analysis of the passage in KARKAMIŠ A4a, §11, Yakubovich 2011a:261f. provides further support for this meaning.

1.1.5Stem
This neuter noun clearly belongs to the word family around the root verb /ad-/. Its suffix /-al-/ is used to derive neuter nouns from verbs (Melchert 2003b:197), which may suggest that the derivational base of this noun was the verb /azza-(i)/ ‘to begin to eat’ or that the allomorph /azz-/ of the root verb /ad-(ti)/ was used as the derivational base. The thematic suffix /-iya-/ n. is partly obscured by contraction (Yakubovich 2016b:465 n. 9).
