1.1.4Meaning

Although this lexeme appears in a well preserved context on one of the KULULU lead strips, its meaning remains in the dark. It is part of the very first clause of the lead strip and shows grammatical agreement with the preceding word -za ‘barley’, suggesting it to be a modifying adjective (cf. Hawkins 1987a:139), even if these occur more frequently before their head noun in HLuw. (Bauer 2014a:230). Hawkins 1987a:139 mentions the possibility of an alternative analysis, which sees the form as a dat./loc. sg. of a noun in /-aza-/, denoting the profession of the person, whose name appears next. In that case, a similar caveat to that of the previous analysis exists, for any titles denoting professions and the like usually appear after the name of the person in HLuw.
