tupleleime/i-

‘inscribed poem (?)’

1.1.1Transmission

This lexeme is found in the inscription of the inscribed pillar of Xanthos, dated contextually to shortly after the ascension of Artaxerxes II in 405-404 BCE and stylistically to around 400 BCE (Borchhardt & Eichner 1997-1999a:19f.).

1.1.2Forms

acc. sg. (?) tupleleimi[ TL 44c.40 (Xanthos)

1.1.3Graphic Features

The word could be incomplete (cf. Schürr 2016d:173). An accusative plural in -iz (or -is) cannot be excluded. Eichner 2005a:20 n. 96 suggests tentatively that the same word tupleleime/i- is to be restored in the Lycian A inscription TL 44a.20-21, i.e. ]eimi, although the restoration [ … tid]eimi remains the most convincing one because of the personal name occurring before the lacuna.

1.1.4Meaning

The word tupleleimi[ occurs in a series of nouns denoting objects that are to be placed as offerings to the gods, i.e. zrbblã : m͂qrẽ : muri : tupleleimi[ (TL 44c.40). While some scholars assumed agreement with the preceding word muri (DLL:132, unclear Neumann 2007a:390), it seems preferable to assume a substantivized participle in -eime/i-, in order to keep the string of substantives intact. Its etymological relationship with Lyc. A tupelija- ‘inscription (?)’ has been mentioned (Eichner 2005a:26 n. 140, Schürr 2016d:173, Gehrisch 2018a:85). Eichner 2005a:20 n. 96 interprets it as an administrative title, which makes no sense in the Lycian B context, where it refers to something dedicated to the gods. Shevoroshkin 2014a:239 sees likewise an individual translating ‘fight-winner’, which is entirely ad hoc. Gehrisch 2018a:82 suggests the meaning ‘inscribed text’, which is more appropriate. Since the Lycian B poem is about the gods and their relationships with the Lycian king, it seems appropriate to think that the inscribed poem is dedicated to the gods. This hypothesis is adopted here tentatively.

1.1.5Stem

The word tupleleime/i- is a substantivized participial formation belonging to a stem in -(e)i-(di), which is derived from a non-attested formation in -ele/i-, i.e. *tuplele/i-. The same base must be postulated for Hieroglyphic Luwian, i.e. */tuppalalla/i-/ (←/tuppalall-iya-/).

[D.S.]

For the derivational base see Lyc. tupe/i-.
