kinzalpa-
‘(an object or ornament made of or decorated with gold)’1.1.1Transmission
This word is attested in an inventory of Manninni (CTH 504) and probably also in two LNS manuscripts of the ritual of Ḫantitaššu (CTH 395).

1.1.2Forms

| [ki-(in-za-)]al-pa-[an] | KBo 13.145 rev. 11’ | (CTH 395, LNS) |
The attestations follow Laroche 1959a:55, CLL:104, HEG A–K:581, Ünal 2007a:345, Ünal 2016a:281, cf. Güterbock 1956a:128. The attestations in the ritual texts have not yet been included in the dictionaries, cf. Chrzanowska 2015a and Chrzanowska 2015b. The transliterations have been checked against the photo of the Mainzer Fotoarchiv.
Košak 1978a:101 restores ki-i[n-za-al-pa- in KUB 12.1 37’, cf. Siegelová 1986a:444 (with question mark). The form in line 36’ has been interpreted as nom.sg.c. (cf. Košak 1978a:104, Siegelová 1986a:445) and as gen.sg. (cf. Laroche 1959a:55, CLL:104), the latter is however not supported by the context.
The restoration in KBo 13.145 is suggested by Chrzanowska 2015b based on the similar passage in KUB 57.79 rev. iv 8. Note, however, that as pointed out by Chrzanowska 2015a the two texts (exemplars 1 and 2 of CTH 395) are very similar but not actually duplicates.

1.1.3Meaning ‘(an object or ornament made of or decorated with gold)’
HEG A–K:581 assumes “ein Kleidungsstück?”, cf. differently Tischler 2008a:88 “ein Schmuckstück” and Tischler 2016a:165 “ornement”, more generally Ünal 2007a: “an object made of gold” (cf. Ünal 2016a:281) and Güterbock 1956a:128 “object in inventory”, no meaning is indicated in Laroche 1959a:55 and CLL:104.
The inventory context of KUB 12.1 shows a list of garments and decorative objects (the transliteration is based on the photo of the Mainzer Fotoarchiv, and in addition, the hand copy as well as the transliterations and translations of Košak 1978a:101, 104; Siegelová 1986a:444f.; HEG L–S:581 and CHD Š:258 have been taken into account):
(35’)TÚGe.íb sa5 kù.gi NA4nu[nuz …] (36’)ki-in-za-al-pa-aš kù.gi 2[…] x […] (37’)1-en kù.gi ša-ri-ia-an-za ki-x[…]
(35’)2 red tunics (with) gold and bea[ds? …] (36’)golden kinzalpa, 2[…] (37’)1 ki[nzalpa?] embroidered?/decorated? with gold
The ritual texts show the following (transliterations are based on the photos of the Mainzer Fotoarchiv, and also the hand copies as well as the transliterations, restorations and translations of Chrzanowska 2015a, Chrzanowska 2015b as well as Ünal 1996a:86 and 92 have been taken into account):
KUB 57.79 rev. iv 8
(8)[ki?-]in-za-al-p[a-an] gim-an s[um? x x GI]Š?ab?-it x[…]
(8)when [they?] g[ive?] the [k]inzalpa […] from/with the [win]dow? […]
KBo 13.145 rev. 11’
(11’)[… -]al-pa-an gim-an s[um?- …]
Unfortunately, neither context further determines the meaning of kinzalpa. The context in the inventory list points towards a decorative object or ornament, the ritual text mentions different kinds of jewelry but the context is too fragmentary for further conclusions. It could be an offering as the restoration with s[um ‘to give’ suggests, but even the verb is broken off in both ritual contexts.
At the moment the meaning of this word can hence only be indicated tentatively as an object or ornament made of or decorated with gold.

1.1.4Origin
The attested form of the word is generally assumed to be Hittite, cf. Güterbock 1956a:128, Laroche 1959a:55 and CLL:104. It is not included in the list of Luwianisms by Melchert 2005a, and van den Hout 2007a:248 records it as marked (with gloss marker), yet only its derivative
?kinzalpašša/i- could probably be a Glossenkeilwort (cf. under the respective lemma).
The word formation of kinzalpa- remains unclear. It is, however, probable that it is a Luwian word, since it is the base for
?kinzalpašša/i-, which shows a Luwian suffix (cf. under the respective lemma) and is hence listed in Laroche 1959a:55 and CLL:104 (cf. also HEG A–K:581 and Ünal 1996a:92 n. 43).
Because it appears in a Hittite context with Hitt. inflection, it is probably a Luwian loan or foreign word.
