1.1.2Forms

gen. adj. Glossenkeil?ki-in-za-al-pa-aš-ši-iš KUB 12.1 rev. iii 5’ (CTH 504, NS )

The attestation follows Laroche 1959a:55, CLL:104, HEG A–K:581, Ünal 2007a:345, Ünal 2016a:281, cf. Rosenkranz 1950a:192 and Güterbock 1956a:128. The transliteration has been checked against the photo of the Mainzer Fotoarchiv.

For the form kinzalpaš (without marker) in line 36’ of the same column, cf. under the lemma kinzalpa-.

1.1.3Graphic Features

According to the photo of the Mainzer Fotoarchiv and differently from Rosenkranz 1950a:192, there is only one wedge before the KI-sign (cf. the hand copy, CLL:104, HEG L–S:581). On the photo, the alleged gloss marker appears to be alligned with the following Winkelhaken of the KI-sign (also indicated on the hand copy). That is somewhat unusual for the marker and casts doubt on the function of the sign in the present context. Note furthermore that this is the only instance of a gloss marker on the whole tablet (despite, as pointed out by Košak 1978a:107, the many other Luwianisms in this text, which are all unmarked, cf. under Origin). Consequently, the existence of a gloss marker in this instance is not assured and one should also consider the possibility of a scribal error.

1.1.4Meaning ‘belonging to kinzalpa’

Although usually no meaning is indicated for this word, it is generally assumed that Glossenkeil?kinzalpašša/i- represents an adjective to kinzalpa- (which is an object or ornament made of or decorated with gold, cf. under the respective lemma), cf. Güterbock 1956a:128, Laroche 1959a:55, CLL:104, Güterbock 1956a:128, HEG L–S:581, Tischler 2008a:88, Tischler 2016a:165, Ünal 2007a:345, and Ünal 2016a:281.

The context of KUB 12.1 shows the following (the transliteration is based on the photo of the Mainzer Fotoarchiv, and in addition, the hand copy as well as the transliteration, restoration and translations of Košak 1978a:100,103; Maxwell-Hyslop 1980a:89; Siegelová 1986a:442f. and HEG A–K:581 have been taken into account):

(4’)1-en KUŠta-ḫap-ši kù[.gi ...] (5’)Glossenkeil?ki-in-za-al-pa-aš-ši-iš [...]

(4’)1 set of leather straps (with) go[ld ...] (5’)of Glossenkeil?kinzalpa [...]

The context is an inventory list and does not show the actual object of Glossenkeil?kinzalpašša/i-. Nevertheless, its morphology points to a Luwian genitival adjective of kinzalpa- (which appears in the same text in line 36’, cf. under the respective lemma).

Based on the context of the base word kinzalpa- in line 36’, Košak 1978a:107 (admitting that the meaning remains unknown) assumes “certainly an object which can be made of gold”. Maxwell-Hyslop 1980a:89, translating “1 set of straps (adored with) gold of kinzalpa”, describes certain kinds of dress fasteners or clasps that could be denoted by this sequence but these considerations are based on the assumption that Glossenkeil?kinzalpaššiš belongs to the preserved part of the preceeding line, which is not assured, taking into account the broken part at the end of line 4’ and directly after Glossenkeil?kinzalpaššiš in line 5’.

To conclude, the meaning of Glossenkeil?kinzalpašša/i- cannot be further determined at the moment other than that it is an adjective belonging to kinzalpa-.

1.1.5Origin

The word is generally assumed to be Luwian because of the gloss marker (which does not necessarily indicate a Luwian origin [although its use seems to correlate with a significant majority of words with Luwian origin]; e.g. Košak 1978a:107 points out that this is the only form with a gloss marker on this tablet, and although “the rest of the text is heavily Luwianised, these forms are left unmarked by the scribe”) but more importantly because of its Luwian morphology, cf. Laroche 1959a:55, CLL:104, Güterbock 1956a:128, HEG A–K:581, Tischler 2008a:88, and Tischler 2016a:165 (not included, however, in the lists of Luwianisms of Melchert 2005a and van den Hout 2007a, who only lists the base kinzalpa- on page 248 as ‘marked’, which does not exactly correspond to the attestation).

As already mentioned under Meaning, it is an adjective formed with the Luwian possessive suffix -ašša/i- (cf. Melchert 2003b:171, 196) to the base kinzalpa- (cf. under the respective lemma).
