1.1.2Forms
| 2sg. impv. act.(?) | [ḫ]u-wa-ar-na-aš-š[a ] | KBo 19.155 iii 24’ | (CTH 751, MS) |
The grammatical interpretation suggested here is only correct if the word is complete as is, i.e. -š[a ] and not -š[a(-) ]. The fragmentary state of the passage calls for caution, although an imperative form is supported by another one occurring in the same line [ … -a]š-ša=mu-u=t (KBo 19.155 iii 24’ + IBoT 2.35 iii 5’).
[D.S.]
1.1.3Meaning
Due to the new join between KBo 19.155 + IBoT 2.35 discovered by D. Sasseville, we gain more insight into the context. The direct object of the verb ḫuwarnašš(a)-(i) is mārḫan ‘the guest’ (IBoT 2.35 iii 4’), referring to the god Zaparwa. Therefore, the meaning ‘sprinkle the guest with water’ is perfectly adequate and supported by another passage, i.e. arri=an marḫan ‘he washes him, the guest’ (KBo 40.108, 5’).
[D.S.]
1.1.4Stem
The verbal formation ḫuwarnašš(a)-(i) is a derivative in -šš(a)-(i) built on the non-attested verb *ḫuwarna-, corresponding to Hitt. ḫurna-/ḫurn-(mi) ‘to sprinkle’.
[D.S.]
For the base of the derivative see Pal. *ḫuwarna-.
