1.1.3Meaning
The word kašti is treated as Luwian by Melchert (CLL:103). Because the passage contains a mix of Palaic and Luwian incantation, it is difficult to assign some fragmentary sentences to either language. In the case of kasti, it must be Palaic, if it is cognate with Luwian zasta/i- ‘this’, because of the initial *k- (< *k̑); see Pal. ka-. However, due to the fragmentary state of the passage, this is not provable. Differently, Melchert (ibid.) assumes an etymological connection with Hitt. kašt- ‘hunger’, which is also possible, but, as he admits, unprovable. Tischler 2008a:83, on the other hand, takes it as a Palaic verbal form of the 3rd singular present (likewise Villanueva Svensson 2014a:83). Supporting evidence can be adduced from the medio-passive form gašāri. All these possibilities should be kept in mind, until more of the context is recovered.
