wedae-zi
‘(unknown)’1.1.1Origin
Following Rizzi Mellini 1979a:542 Starke 1990a:308 sees in wedae- ‘to bring (here)’ (Friedrich 1952a:256; EDHIL:1009; HEG U-Z:533–535, Tischler 2008a:227, Tischler 2016a:439; Ünal 2007a:805, Ünal 2016a:595) a loanword from Luwian widā(i)-. However, this Luwian verb does not mean ‘bringen, führen’ as Starke claims, but ‘to smash’ (see the discussion s.v.). Accordingly, this Hittite verb is not a borrowing from this Luwian verb (see already HEG U-Z:535) and thus not listed either in the Cuneiform Luwian glossaries (Laroche 1959a; CLL; Tischler 2008a, Tischler 2016a; Ünal 2016a:949–977) or in the lists of Luwianisms (Melchert 2005a and van den Hout 2007a). For its etymology see the discussion in EDHIL:1009f. with refs. (cf. also HEG U-Z:535–537).
