Ancient Greek μνῴα (μνωΐα)
‘name of the serf population in Crete’1.1.1Origin
The Greek word μνῴα (μνωΐα, the form μνοΐα is due to a Cretan dialectal development, Bechtel 1923a:790, 676) ‘name of the serf population in Crete’ is usually derived from δμώς ‘slave, servant’ (DELG 289, 707; GEW I:403, GEW II:247; EDG:343 [although also of unknown origin in EDG:960], all with refs.). However, Simon 2019a:299–302 (cf. also Simon 2018a:400) argues that this is phonologically not possible and proposes a loanword from Carian mno, which at least secondarily means ‘servant’ (see the discussion s.v. mno).
